This is a novel written in the form of a diary. Its narrator is Logan Mountstuart, who we first meet as a rather pompous schoolboy.

My first thought was that this was a character I was not going to like very much. However, as I got to know him better through his diaries, and as he mellowed and matured, I grew very fond of him.

The book spans most of the 20th century and due to Logan having the knack of always being where the action is, it's a bit of a history lesson as well as being a good story.

Among other things, he's on the periphery of the Bloomsbury group in the 1930s, endures high adventure and unimaginable tragedy in World War II, and is part of the New York art scene in the 1950s and 60s.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book and would recommend it.
