Knowing this is a book on fame and our celebrity-obsessed times, you could be forgiven for thinking it was called Zadie Smith and written by the Autograph Man.

But actually Alex-Li Tandem is Smith's fictional Autograph Man. He's the kind of guy you might associate with IT freaks and Sci-Fi enthusiasts; he's single-minded, compulsive and (just a wee bit) a-social. His pursuit? The signed offcasts of the famed and famous.

Zadie Smith's characters are some of the most memorably drawn in contemporary fiction and Alex, despite his rather odd fetishes, is no exception. But there's also Adam, the lovable Rastafarian and Honey, New York's most famous pair of lips.

Read this book for the ride, for the pitch-perfect dialogue, for the irony, and not because its written by one of Britain's most celebrated literary darlings.
